Instant Snow

Who says you can't play with snow when it's 90 degrees outside in the middle of the Summer?

This "snow"  is so cool ~ literally!

I first saw this stuff several months ago when we went to a local children's museum.  The kids loved playing with it, so when Grandma needed gift ideas for my son's birthday, I suggested this fake snow . Because his birthday was in February I forgot about it  decided to save it until it would be more of a novelty.  Now that it's the middle of summer and real snow is a distant memory, I took it out this weekend and the kids have been playing with it non-stop!

Apparently it's made out of a polymer similar to the absorbent gel inside a disposable diaper.  It comes in a powder form and expands significantly when water is added.

Two teaspoons straight out of the package

After adding 1/2 cup of water.

Once the water is added, it's light and fluffy, just like real snow.  It even feels cool to the touch (something about the water evaporating creates the coolness).  It's not really cold ~ think fridge temp, not freezer temp ~ but it's noticeable.

My son loved playing with it.

He added some plastic baseball figures into the snow.

A blizzard ballgame!

We mixed up just 15 teaspoons of the powder to get quite a bit of snow and still have a TON left in the package.  It won't melt and you can supposedly re-activate it with a little more water if it starts to lose it's moisture, but I'll probably toss it after a week or so and make up a new batch.  Oh, and if your kids decide to throw some at each other some spills out onto the floor, it vacuums up easily.

NOTE:

I was not asked to review this product and we bought it ourselves (well, Grandma did).  I just think it's REALLY cool and wanted to share it with you.  However, I am an Amazon associate, so if you do decide to pick up some for yourselves and click through this link to buy it, I'll get a very small percentage of the purchase price.  (which would be a cool way for me to pick up some more craft supplies to share with you! ;) )

We got this 1 lb package because it seemed to be the best value

But it also comes in smaller sizes.

  3. I discovered your blog through pinterest and LOVE your creativity! I have a three kids- 6,2,5 mos- and am always looking for different creative ways to play with my kiddos. It is hard to find things I can do with both of my girls but finding something that works for two different skillsets is a challenge. The instant snow is a great way to let them be who they are! THANK YOU!! I didn't even know this stuff existed!!

  6. They sell this in Big Bear, and the woman said if it starts to dry out just spray it with some water, and then let it dry and put it into a baggy and you can reuse it over and over again.

  7. I just read your post...I am now wondering if you could use the inside gel like stuff in the diaper to recreate the "squishy baff" they are now selling in the store? I have a 5 month old son so I have the diapers on hand. Will check to see if it works!! Definitely would be cheaper than buying the store bought stuff at 10 bucks for two baths worth!!!

  8. How much snow do you think the 1 gallon bag would make? I want to buy it for decorating, but I have no idea how much it will make total. Any idea??

  9. great blog, thanks.
You can cut a diaper, put it in a zipped bag, and shake. The same material - polymer - will be in the bottom of the bag.
Take it out and use in the same way.

  10. I love all of your craft and experiment ideas! I'm babysitting two 9 year old boys this summer and I will definitely put your ideas to good use! As a plus the boys are twins and their birthday was last week so I will be buying them some of this insta-snow for a birthday gift. Thanks for the great ideas!
