Kindle Cover from a Hardcover Book

This isn't a kid-related project, but sometimes parents deserve a special treat too!

NOTE:  For some reason, this page and tutorial is not loading properly for some readers.  If this is the case and you need the step by step directions, just email me at ComeTogetherKids@hotmail.com

Last month I treated myself to the new Kindle Fire and I'm loving it so far.  After it arrived, I knew I needed a case to protect my new toy,  but I wasn't about to shell out another 30 or 40 bucks just for a holder.  So, since necessity is the mother of invention, I made my own (and I have to say I like it way better than the more expensive alternative).

Check this out...

And did any observant readers notice that the title of the book is "Laura"?  How cool is that!?!?

( I picked up the book years ago because of the title.  I don't remember the story being memorable, but I'm glad I held on to it because it's the perfect new Kindle cover for me!)

Okay, now do you want to see how easy it was to make?  It's totally no-sew and costs only a few dollars!

Here's what you'll need:

  • approx. 1/3 yard quilted fabric (mine was reversible)
  • 3/8" iron on adhesive tape ( I used Heat n Bond )
  • 3/8" elastic
  • hard cover book that's a bit bigger than your Kindle
  • glue gun (not pictured!)

Here's what to do:

(Don't be overwhelmed by the ton of pictures and steps, it's not hard!  I just tried to show each step because I couldn't give measurements since each book will be a different size!)

1.  Cut the pages out of your book. I just used a sharp knife to cut down either side of the spine.

2.  (Optional)  My book was quite a bit thicker than my Kindle, so I ran some hot glue down the edges of the spine and pushed it together to make it a little bit narrower.

See how it's not as thick as the original book now?

3.  Lay your cover open flat and cut your fabric about 1/2" longer than your book, and a little more than one and a half times as wide.

See how there's extra fabric?  That will make your pocket.

4.  Put your Kindle on the book and decide how tall you want your pocket to be so your Kindle fits in, but you can still easily pull it out.  Then add 1/2", and cut across.

5.  Put your iron on tape across the top of your pocket piece and iron in place.

6.  Then cut 1/2" slit at the end of the tape, remove the paper backing, and iron down 1/2" hem.

(NOTE: You could probably just use hot glue for this too, but I liked how the iron on tape gave me nice straight edges)

See how the iron on hem finishes off the top of the pocket?

7.  Okay, now we're going to get the first side ready.  Cut another 1/2" slit at the top of your pocket so you can finish off the top part of the edge.

8.  Turn your fabric over, put the iron on tape along that top part of the edge, and iron down a 1/2" hem.

Like how I get lazy and use a towel instead of dragging out my ironing board?
9.  Now with the fold of the pocket and the hem on the top part, the left side is finished off.

10.  Put another strip of iron on tape along the left edge, remove the paper and iron the left side of the pocket down.  (This helps keep your device in a little bit from the outside edge of the cover)

11.  Next, put your Kindle in the pocket and decide where its right edge will be so it's a snug fit.  Add 1" to that mark and cut your fabric.

12.  Put your iron on tape on your new cut edge, then iron down a 1/2" hem.

13.  Okay, you're almost finished with the pocket!  Just put the iron on tape on the side and bottom of your pocket, peel off the paper backing and iron in place.

14.  Next, let's finish off the bottom edge!  Just turn your fabric over, put iron on tape along the bottom edge, peel off the paper backing and iron down a 1/2" hem.

15.  Now get that hot glue gun warmed up and let's start attaching our fabric to our book.  ( I decided to glue down two sides, then finish the rest of the edges so it fit the cover perfectly, instead of trying to measure and get everything lined up right).  Glue the left and bottom finished edges to the inside cover of your book making sure the fabric is nicely lined up on the edges.  I glued down the edges and also put some glue to attach the fabric to the inside cover.

NOTE: Don't glue all the way to the top on the left hand side, you still have to finish off that top edge.

16.  Next, flip your book over and put the iron on tape along the edge of the right side of the book.  Cut off any extra fabric, then iron down your 1/2" hem.

17. Do the same thing along the top edge of your book ~ put down the iron on tape, and iron down your 1/2" hem.

18.  Now that your fabric inside has all the edges finished and is the exact size of your book cover, hot glue the rest of it in place.  Your front cover should be pretty much glued down, so just glue the fabric to the spine, the inside of the back cover and the right and top edges.

19.  Now you're really almost finished!  Place your Kindle on the right side opposite the pocket, and cut 4 pieces of the elastic.   Position them so they'll hold the corners of your device, then hot glue them in place.  (removing your Kindle before hot gluing , of course!)
Sorry about the annoying reflection of our ceiling fan, I was working at night!
That's it!  You're finished!!!  Don't be discouraged by the 19 (yikes!) steps in this tutorial.  The whole project took me less than an hour and I was figuring it out as I went along.

Now you're ready to check out your favorite blog, read a new book, or play a few games.  Your Kindle is well protected and you still have the feel of holding a real book in your hands (because it is a real book cover). Choose a copy of your favorite book and your new e-reader cover is customized for you ~ plus you're saving the $30+ dollars that you would have spent on a plain boring cover from the store.

I have to admit, I'm thrilled with the way this turned out.  I had an idea in my head of what I wanted to do and it actually went according to plan.  I know I'm dating myself and revealing a bit too much about my 80's TV viewing habits here, but "I love it when a plan comes together!"  (Bonus points to anyone who can identify the TV show!)

  4. What a great idea! Not only does it look lovely and protect the device, but I bet you are way less likely to have it stolen when it is disguised as a book!

  5. This is awesome! If we're going with the retro tv quotes, "It's so cunning you could pin a tail on it and call it a fox". Although I'm guessing that may be a leeeeeeeeeeetle bit too British for my audience. Seriously though, I'm pinning this!

  7. WOW - what an awesome idea, Laura!! I totally want to make one - love that you had a 'Laura' book. Also, I'm always a fan of no sew projects. That's what I'm talking about! I have a book called 'Forever Amber' but it's not hardcover...

  11. Kate, I just tested it out... It will slip out if you turn it upside down. But I haven't had that happen to me yet with regular use. If I carry it in my purse, I put it sideways with the spine facing up and it's been fine. It's also fine if I have the Kindle just secured with the elastic straps. However, if I was making one for my kids who might not always carry it correctly, I might put a piece of ribbon with velcro on it to fold over the top of the pocket to hold it in place if it's upside down. You could just hot glue the ribbon down before you fold the pocket flap over to form the pocket. Then put velcro on the end of the ribbon and on the top front of the pocket. Does that make sense?

  12. I'm so in love with this tutorial! Not only have you just taken away one of my must convincing arguments against getting an ereader (the "feel" of a book in my hands), you've also given me a great idea for an upcoming birthday gift! Your finished piece is gorgeous!

  19. I saw this and LOVED it. I got a Kindle as an early Christmas present so I went right to the store and got stuff to make it. It was super easy! Mine turned out really cute. I added a cover to the pocket that was held down with velcro and I also added elastic to the outside to hold the cover together (I was paranoid about my kindle falling out). But I absolutely love it. It was only about $10 to make (not counting the glue gun that I had to buy) and it took me about 2 hours. I've never crafted anything like this before and it came out perfect! Thanks for the idea!!! :)

  21. Such a great idea! I tried it out as a Christmas gift and it looks awesome, I can't wait to gift it! I was wondering if you have any good ideas for decorating the cover of the book. I was thinking an iron on appliques, but I don't know if that would stick. Thanks again for the wonderful (and so inexpensive!) idea! :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. That's awesome, Emma! I just ended up leaving the cover of mine blank, so I'm not sure what might work to decorate it. I'd worry that an iron on applique wouldn't hold up too well. Whenever I've tried to use one in the past (not on a book cover but on other things), they'd eventually fall off. I'd think acrylic paints might work, if you're handy with a paintbrush and stencil and wanted to put an initial or something on the front. Or, I know there are iron-on vinyls that you can cut out, but I've never used them personally.

Whatever you use, good luck, and I hope your recipient likes it!

  23. I just made 2 of these! 2 of my daughters have Kindles. I will say that I saw someone said they were worried about it falling out when it's upside down. It sounds like you're putting the Kindle in the pocket, but it's supposed to go in the elastic strips. We use the pocket for pictures, notes, etc. When I have the Kindle in the elastic strips, it holds it perfectly secure at any angle. (I had purchased a cover for mine, and it was made the same way.)
Anyway... such an awesome idea... thanks for sharing! This was so much fun! :)

    ReplyDelete
  24. Oh, let me add... when I did the elastic strips, I glued the corners so they'd fold under the Kindle, instead of straight like in the instructions. I'm not sure if that makes any sense or not.
Anyway, that might be why mine doesn't slip out when upside down.

  29. What a great idea. I don't have a Kindle and don't think I'm getting one, but this gave me an idea for something else.

Buy the way, those using this for a kindle, think of the hard back Reader's Digest books. You can find them at yard sales and thrift stores for pretty cheap! I'm not sure the size of a kindle, but check those out. They have pretty cool covers too!

  30. I love this idea and I will probably make it too.

But I did want you to know that I got a great Kindle Fire cover online at Amazon. It came with a car charger, a usb cable, a safety credit card holder and the cover for $12.95 with free shipping. Available in black or red. I am not affilated with this company but I do most of my shopping online and hardly ever in a store.

  33. I made mine out of duct tape (the decorative kind) and an old pizza box LOL This is brilliant though. If you used fabric strips on the bottom that were a little thicker, more like mini pockets, you could just use the elastic at the top. Can't wait to make one now...wonder if I have any fabric?

  42. For those folks looking for books to make this, just go to a used book sale at your local library. Our library has sales every quarter, with about 10,000 books available, so you will be sure to find one the right size. It is a good way to support the library!
Also, did you know that many libraries have e-books that you "check out" and load to your e-reader? That way you don't have to purchase every book you want to read!

I didn't have reversible quilted fabric, so I did the pocket separately and added protective padding underneath the fabric, but in the end I love it (I used the book The Great Train Robbery... up next: America - Land of Progress!). Thanks! :)

  45. Love this idea, but would suggest adding some type of loop to go around your wrist. I have the Kindle reader. If you are like me, reading can lull you to sleep and whoops there goes the reader. Depending on where you are at the time, that could be icky (hospital bed), as well as break the reader and kind of embarassing to drop it on the floor. I was unable to add a loop directly to my reader, so I fashioned one that hung on the cover. It is best for the loop to be at the bottom of the reader since it will loop around your wrist where you hold the reader. When I fall asleep, even in my own bed, the reader is secure. I don't have to get out of bed to pick it up, I don't have to search the covers for it, nor do I accidentally sling it across the bed when I remove the covers in the morning. I also put a button on the top edge of the INSIDE of the pocket (where it won't scratch the face of the reader), and hook my cell to it and slide it into the pocket. This way, I do not have to search for my cell if I am sitting in a waiting room, etc.

  46. This is a great idea, and want to make one for my Nook Color and maybe for my sister for her iPad. Where did you find the quilted fabric? It looks like it is already finished. Did you buy it like that? I am no quilter so I don't know if Joann's would have it. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Toni, yes I got the fabric at JoAnn's. There was a section in my store with solid color quilted fabric and then some reversible prints (which is what I used). The edges aren't finished, but it cuts easily and seems to be holding up well just by turning the edges under with that small "hem".

  53. Question - I have a blank book (journal type) that I bought because I loved the cover, but I've never used it. Loband behold, it's the perfect size for my Kindle Touch (good thing too, I was ready to sacrifice a Charles de Lint that was also the right size!). The thing that worries me is that it has a gold over flap with a magnetic catch. Does anyone know if the magnets will damage my Kindle?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I can't say definitely, but I just did a quick google search and it seems that magnets won't affect the kindle. Apparently, even some kindle covers sold by amazon close with magnets. Hope this helps!

  54. I just made this project. It took me about an hour and a half. My pocket is a little tight, but its just fine. I might use the pocket for my power cord, and adapter. The elastic is very tight, so I think it will just stay put on that side. I bought my book at an antique store for $1. Thanks Laura, I love it!

The project look really easy to make and a great idea...The only thing I would suggest to everyone is that they read the book that they are recycling at least once...give the "old fashion" book a final read before repurposing it. 1. Overall, it's held up well. I've had to re-glue the elastic tabs a few times, but that only takes a few seconds. If you haven't made yours yet, I might suggest that you glue the elastic under the edges of the fabric to make it a little stronger.

      Delete
  70. I really like this and think I am going to try it. I think I will put slits in the fabric and put the elastic through the fabric so you can't see the ends of the elastic. What do you guys think?

    1. Ooh, thanks for the tip about the fabric fuse. I've never heard of it but I'll have to check it out.

As for your problem of making them as gifts, how about looking up the dimensions of the devices, then making a cardboard "model" that's the same size so you can make the holder to fit?

  72. I dont like the idea of encouraging others to ruin perfectly good books. No one has any respect any longer for the printed word thanks to kindles and nooks. As an arts and crafster myself can appreciate the creativity and ingenuity of the project, but isnt ripping apart a book just further progressing the near extinction of books, libraries, book stores etc.? I dont know. I just cant get on board with this. I see it as disrespectful and wrong. Like a slap in the face. I would feel horrible taking the pages off the spine of the book. I was always taught to take care of my books and READ them, display them, respect them. Just trying to get all of you to think.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. At least you can still read the book this way! I've seen tutorials that cut out the middle of all the pages and then glue the heck out of them to make a secret box. THAT makes me cringe!

      Delete
    2. I can never bring myself to cut up a good book for a craft either. BUT I have gone to my local thrift store and asked them for any damaged books that they are going to trash anyway. Some books are inevitably destined for the trash (think dropping it in the bath tub or the dog making a chew toy out of it)no matter how much we love them. So crafting with them at least saves them from that fate.

  73. I would love to give this a try! I think I would put the tape up to the folded edge of the pocket instead of over it and then notch the top so that way, when you fold the side in, it isn't twice as thick on the corner. =)

  74. I have been browsing for awhile for easy cover for kindle and I like yours. I love that you have pictures and lots of steps. Perfectly understandable. I had seen others that assumed you would figure it out. not for me. thanks for sharing.
