A couple of months ago, I came across this AWESOME idea for a Chocolate Emergency Valentine at Making Memories with Your Kids. I absolutely loved the concept (and her whole blog full of great ideas), but I didn't have time to make them for Valentine's Day. I bookmarked it for next year and then realized, I don't have to wait that long! It will make the perfect April Fools' prank for my kids.

I cannot wait to fool my kids on April 1st! Plus, it was really simple to make.

SUPPLIES:
* Pop top can of fruit (make sure the bottom does NOT have rounded edges) Delmonte and our store brand were fine
* Can opener (one that removes the whole lid would be best, but I made do with a regular one, I just had to be careful with the sharp edges)
* candy of your choice ( I used Hershey's kisses and Starbursts because they wouldn't be too rattle-y)
* tissue paper or shredded paper
* hot glue gun
DIRECTIONS:
1. Use your can opener to open the BOTTOM of the can of fruit. If you are using a regular can opener, don't cut around all the way. Leave about 1/2 " - 1" intact. If you have one of the handy can openers that removes the whole lid without sharp edges, you can cut all the way around.

2. Empty out the fruit. (Save it so they can have a healthier snack after they eat all their candy!) Rinse out your can and dry the insides.

3. Fill the clean, empty can with your candies, then put in some tissue paper so the contents don't shake around and give away the surprise.

4. Using hot glue, seal up the bottom of your can.

| It's not perfect, but they really won't be looking at the bottom. |
5. Try not to giggle when you pack it in their lunch or serve it for a snack.

ReplyDeleteFYI - I use a can opener that opens the cans edge (not the inside)so the bottom seal was a little cleaner.
He hee! I giggled when I saw this and I DON'T giggle! I don't send that kind of fruit in my kids' lunches, so I used a yogurt container and cut a hole in the bottom but didn't cut it the whole way out so that it had a hinge.
ReplyDeleteI then emptied it, cleaned it, dried it and added the note and candy. I then put packing tape over the hole. I cannot wait to pick them up from school today to see what they say!!! I have been giggling all day!

Thank you so much for the great idea! It worked perfectly for all of my kids! And as a bonus, I was proclaimed a really awesome mom by several kids (and by a couple of lunch room aides) in three cafeterias.

I worked at an elementary school, and one of my students and his siblings brought these in for some of the teachers. They had re-sealed the can with rubber cement (seems like a good idea, right?), but the fumes had permeated the candy and made several of the teachers very sick. It's a super fun idea, and I say go for it, just follow the directions and use hot glue!
